India vs New Zealand Set for ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Final Showdown
India will face New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:15 PM Nepali time.
Co-host India is aiming to win its third T20 World Cup title, while New Zealand hopes to make history by lifting its first-ever T20 World Cup trophy.
Road to the Final
India reached the final after defeating two-time champions England in a thrilling semifinal. After suffering a defeat against South Africa during the Super 8 stage, the Indian team recovered strongly and secured a narrow seven-run victory over England to book their place in the final.
New Zealand, on the other hand, ended South Africa’s unbeaten run in the semifinal with a commanding nine-wicket victory.
The semifinal proved to be a dominant performance from New Zealand. After restricting South Africa to 169 runs, opener Finn Allen smashed the fastest century in T20 World Cup history, scoring an unbeaten 100 runs from just 33 balls to guide his team comfortably into the final.
Captains Confident Ahead of Final
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his team is not considered the tournament favorite but believes they can challenge India on their home ground.
He added that New Zealand is prepared to silence the home crowd and fight for the trophy.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav appeared relaxed ahead of the final. He said leading the Indian team in a World Cup final is a special moment and the entire squad is excited for the big match.
India Chasing Historic Third Title
India will be playing their fourth T20 World Cup final. They previously won the tournament in 2007, the inaugural edition, and again in 2024. However, they lost the 2014 final to Sri Lanka.
If India wins this year, they will become the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times and also the first to successfully defend the title.
Currently, West Indies (2012, 2016) and England (2010, 2023) have also won the tournament twice.
New Zealand Eyeing First White-Ball World Title
New Zealand previously reached the T20 World Cup final in 2021, but lost to Australia.
The Black Caps have also experienced heartbreak in two ODI World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019, as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy final.
However, they did win the first World Test Championship (2019–21) after defeating India in the final.
Tournament Performance
India has been one of the strongest teams in the tournament, winning seven of their eight matches, with their only loss coming against South Africa in the Super 8 stage.
New Zealand’s journey to the final has been more inconsistent. They finished second in their group with three wins and one defeat, then recorded one win and one loss in the Super 8 stage, with one match abandoned. Overall, they have five wins and two losses in the tournament.
Head-to-Head Record
Interestingly, India has never beaten New Zealand in T20 World Cup history. The two teams have met three times, with New Zealand winning all three matches.
-
2007 T20 World Cup – New Zealand won by 10 runs
-
2016 T20 World Cup – New Zealand won by 47 runs
-
2021 T20 World Cup – New Zealand won by 8 wickets
Overall in T20 internationals, the teams have faced each other 30 times, with India winning 18 matches and New Zealand winning 11, while one match ended in a tie.
